Maintenance is minimal, and only the models for septic systems will need a refill of the microorganism solution. The only problem often faced is that of clogging, and you might have to call a plumber to clear the drain, if the clog is stubborn. Most of the popular brands offer lifetime warranties for the appliance, and some even extend home service contracts.

General Tips for Using Refuse Disposal Appliances

Always let some extra water flow, before and after the food waste has been pulverized. This way, the drain will be cleared, and the blades will give an optimal performance. If you do not run adequate water, food waste can be trapped inside the unit and start rotting, which can create quite a stink.

It is better to run cold water instead of hot, as fats in the food waste can melt, and again become solid as they travel further down the drain. This can create messy blockages in your pipes, whereas cold water will not let the fat melt, and it will be pulverized in the unit.

Do not use harsh chemical like drain cleaners or bleaches for cleaning the sink. These substances are highly corrosive and can damage the blades and grinding mechanism in your refuse disposal unit. If you are using a septic tank then these chemicals will wipe out the microorganisms that are needed to break down the waste.
